Head West to the Warm, Crystal Blue Waters of Hawaii
The Journey to Maui: It’s Worth It, and Then Some
By Heather Whipps
The journey to Maui may seem daunting, perhaps a bit more of a trek than the flights to the Caribbean. Lucky west coasters with a geographical advantage have traveled out there for decades and fallen in love with much more than the convenience, though, and we wanted to know why.
It didn’t take long to figure it all out, and the trip out there to find out was more than worth it.

CaribbeanWay has recently added several new, striking villas on Maui — an island we discovered to live up to that dreamy, postcard-perfect reputation that seems to follow Hawaii, and then some. We spent considerable time there taking in the sights, sounds and experiences of the place, including the ins and outs of the properties we’re offering. Most of these lie on or near the coast of West Maui around the town of Lahaina and north towards Kapalua. This is where most of the "action" happens in Maui, a relatively sleepy island speck that offers the feel of real Hawaii without sacrificing convenience. It’s great for people who want to simply relax at the beach one day and then take in some high-adventure the next. The scenery you’ll spot—lush, mountainous, and unlike anything you’ve ever seen—alone is enough to make the trip out there worth it.
Walking up and down the beaches in Maui, especially near Lahaina, you’ll spot the many outfitters available to suit you up for your activity of choice. There are lots of organized tours that head out to sea, including snorkel cruises and trips to neighboring islands. Even if you’re not someone who’s apt to try out water sports for yourself, you will be entertained: daring kite boarders, surfers and sporties of all kinds do their thing right off the shore, and you can watch them all day if you want (and many work up the courage to try yourself?). The adrenaline rush alone will be worth it.

Land lovers have quite the selection in Maui: the hiking is spectacular, of course, and some driving tours more of a must-see ritual than optional activity, locals will tell you. One of these—the wiggling trek from Paia to Hana—passes waterfalls and tiny, pit-stop villages perfect for picnicking. Bike tours are also very popular here, especially down (you’re driven up) the side of Haleakala volcano. This exhilarating ride usually follows a quintessentially viewing of the sunrise from the volcano’s peak: don’t worry, the early wake-up call is worth it, too.
Check out these phenomenal properties:
Ocean Song
The oceanfront living room is the focal point at this comfortable two-bedroom villa, which sits on the second floor with optimal views. The white sand beach is just 100-feet away.
Coco Palms
Sitting just yards back from the beach at Kapalua, guests of this spacious three-bedroom villa have access to the resort’s communal fitness facilities, pool, hot tub and entertainment pavilion.
Garuda
This Asian-inspired villa sits on a hill with great views over the ocean. Everything here is custom-designed and is great for outdoor living.
Golden Conch
One of our standout homes, this 5BR estate on the beach at Kapalua includes every amenity imaginable. Nearly the entire oceanfront side of the villa can be opened up to enjoy the views and bring the outside in.
Getting Lei’d in Maui
Yes, we went for the cheesy joke. But, as it turns out, getting lei’d is a different experience depending on where you go in Hawaii. Lei makers in Maui prefer the delicate lokelani rose when fashioning their blossom necklaces. Brides in Hawaii will typically wear strands of white jasmine to their weddings. |
