Top 3 Reasons Why We Love St. Thomas
Accessible Island Getaway, Perfect for Sun-Seekers!
By Heather Whipps
Ah, St. Thomas. Is there anything you can’t do? You tempt us with your familiarity and seduce us with the exotic all at the same time. You’re quiet, but have everything we need. Your beaches are beautiful but not crowded, your restaurants a mix of the fancy and the casual to suit our moods. Anybody that has been to St. Thomas, the most popular of the US Virgin Islands, understands its allure.

Here, in no particular order, are the top three reasons why we love St. Thomas and why we think you will too!:
Magnificent Villas
We may be a bit biased here, but there really is no better way to experience St. Thomas than staying in a villa. Maybe it’s how they allow you to make yourself at home while keeping that distinctly Caribbean atmosphere, or the way they are always in the most postcard-worthy spots on the island. There are so many to choose from here, but these are a few of our favorites...

Stone’s Throw Villa: This colorful, cheery home is about as Caribbean as it gets, with a to-die-for setting overlooking the sea.

L’Esperance: 10,000+ square feet of space on five acres of hilltop. Enough said.

Great View: An aptly-named villa if there ever was one, this six-bedroom home has lots of space for families to share.

Siren’s Song: The ultimate in peace and quiet, this outlying villa is luxury and seclusion rolled into one.

Villa Jamie: Dramatic and bold in location and design, Villa Jamie takes infinity-edge pools to a whole new, cliffhanging level.
Caribbean Atmosphere, North American Tastes
Sure it’s technically the USA—very evident in the shopping boutiques around the harbors, burgers on the menu and proliferation of flights that come here from the mainland every day. But don’t be fooled, St. Thomas is as Caribbean as bougainvillea trees and red roof tiles. You’ll feel it everywhere, in the mishmash of heritages, from French to Danish, and the much slower way of things here. And then there are the beaches: nothing so soft and white adorns the continental USA (sorry, Florida).
What there is to do
The active, get up and go traveler has found their paradise in St. Thomas, where a schedule could be filled 24/7 with a different activity if one desired (though we do recommend getting some sleep!). Those include sports of all facets, like scuba diving, sailing, fishing, golf and tennis, of course. But the walking-tour type will be satisfied too, with plenty of historical landmarks and trails available for your learning pleasure. Charlotte Amalie is thick with things to see, especially. Ride the Paradise Point Tramway to the 697-foot peak above the harbor for a great vantage point.
Free to Duty-Free All Day
While anyone can fall in love with the shopping mecca of St. Thomas, Americans have a particular affinity because of the duty-free allowances available to them. US citizens may purchase up to $1,600 worth of duty-free goods in the Virgin Islands and send home an unlimited quantity of gifts worth less than $100 (with a few exclusions). |
