Bacarat, Poker, Blackjack: Winning Villas in the Caribbean
Follow the action south!
By Heather Whipps
If you like to spend an evening rolling the dice or challenging the house, the Caribbean doesn't disappoint. Not all islands have casinos, but the ones that do incorporate them nicely into the laid-back, carefree environment. Luckily (again!), many of our villas are within a dice-throw of the fun and games.
Here are the regions we'd suggest for the gamers among you:
St. Martin
This dual French-Dutch island is the undisputed champion of casino destinations, with an energetic nightlife that includes over ten gambling halls (all on the Dutch side). The Diamond Casino alone has 250 slot machines and all the casinos boast blackjack, craps and roulette. Most of the action is centered in Philipsburg, the Dutch capital where you'll also find the best restaurants and shopping on the island. Just a few minutes from Philipsburg is the hub of low-key villa living, Terres Basses—a great place to get back to after trying your luck with the dice. La Pergola and Cascades are located on the hillside with great views, while L'Oasis has a prime beachfront spot, two pools and six luxurious bedrooms—speaking of lucky!
St. Croix Choose St. Croix if you want a Virgin Island with casino flair. This island, the largest of the USVI, has new casinos sprouting up each year it seems, especially in and around the two main towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted. St. Croix is also a great destination for scuba divers and nature-lovers, with a varied landscape that includes everything from rainforest to desert. Much of it remains undeveloped—so start picturing what kind of villa you'd build with your winnings! For the time being, our villas, like Paradise Point, will more than make do. Stay at Mango Hill Greathouse for a touch of the old country with modern amenities. For uniqueness, nothing beats Clairmont Mill, a converted windmill with five bedrooms and an amazing hilltop position.
Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic has just a few casinos to its name, but is still a must-have for many of our of guests. Our villas are, conveniently, close to everything, including the poker tables. Check out the Playa Dorada casino in Puerto Plata while staying at the sprawling Lazy Heart villa, a ten-bedroom complex with more to do than a typical resort. Stay in Casa de Campo at our villas Hacienda de Las Palmas and La Vera and you can even join in on casino day tours to Santo Domingo.
Curacao
Curacao's nightlife is largely devoted to the action surrounding its dozen or so casinos (like the Americana), most of which are within a stone's throw from its beaches and make for a great way to end the day. When you want to kick back after a night at the tables, head to one of our villas. Both Villa Manise and Sirena Bay Estate are well-insulated from the action, with lots of vegetation and great views providing a much more relaxed atmosphere.
A Change of Pace
After a day at the casino, mix it up a bit by touring the remnants of Curacao's rich and distinctive cultural heritage. Bits of its old Dutch colonial past remain in the towns, as well as throughout its colorful gingerbread architecture. |
