Extra! Extra!: Trip Report from the Virgin Islands
Island hopping at it’s best!
By Heather Whipps
CaribbeanWay's first stop on its tour of the Virgin Islands was St. Thomas, where most flights from the U.S. to the Virgin Islands touch down due to its large runway and airport facilities. The busiest of the U.S.V.I.’s lived up to its reputation, with an energy felt on few other Caribbean islands. You really get the sense that people actually live here—that this is a home, more than just a tourist pit stop. The bonus is that it's full of things to do, places to eat and boutiques to shop.

In contrast, our next destination couldn't have been calmer. St. John, just a short ferry ride from St. Thomas, is a completely different world. Mostly covered by national park, the island isn't made for guests wanting non-stop action. Instead, you get some of the most picturesque, untouched landscapes in the Virgin Islands. The area of Peter Bay was especially impressive.
"I would send any of my top clients to Peter Bay, St. John," said villa specialist Levi Hoffman. "It's probably the most beautiful spot in the Virgin Islands and, for value, it can't be beat." While there are few beachfront villas in St. John, guests wanting an on-the-sand experience can find one at Peter Bay Beach House. This three-bedroom home was a resounding favorite.

One of the most pleasant surprises? Tortola. While our villa specialists knew the island as a great spot to send guests looking for natural beauty and quiet, they didn't realize just how gorgeous the beaches were, or how quiet.
"In Tortola you'd find a new beach around every corner," remarked Ben Tuff, CaribbeanWay's Director of Sales. "And they were all deserted. I've never seen sand go to waste like that!" The consensus was that Tortola is a true hidden gem, great for every occasion but especially perfect for lazy beach holidays. Gun Point, Towanda and Casa Platano easily fit the bill.

On to Virgin Gorda. Without exception, the team loved Tortola's smaller and slower-paced sister. They found it very scenic, for sure, but commented most on the sheer quality of its homes. You simply can't go wrong with a villa rental on Virgin Gorda, especially as most, like Baraka Point and Sea's Song Villa, are also within a few minutes of one of the island's many near-deserted beaches. In keeping with the trend across most of the Virgin Islands, the people here are very friendly too, and will wave and honk their horns on the street no matter who you are. While some people do live here year-round, even weekly visitors are made to feel welcome and at home.
Bring Your Buck
Though the British Virgin Islands belong to the UK, the US dollar is the official currency throughout. That makes jumping around between Virgin Islands easy and convenient, should you want to mix up paces and style during your holiday with day trips. |
