Love To Scuba or Snorkel? Turks Is For You
Island’s turquoise waters a haven for underwater explorers
By Heather Whipps

The Turks and Caicos aren’t boring above water, but explore what they offer below sea level and you’ll consider trading in your lungs for gills. This isn’t just a good place to go snorkeling and diving, it’s the place: consider that Jacques Cousteau, the world’s foremost sea-god, ranked these islands among his favorites. And it doesn’t stop there: waterskiing, sailing and fishing are also plentiful around the islands, especially off Providenciales’ outfitter-jammed (and stunning) Grace Bay Beach.

But back to the biggies: snorkeling and diving. While you could easily strap on a set of flippers and mask and head out from any shoreline on Provo, a few spots are worth mentioning for offering something above-and-beyond the "average", ridiculously gorgeous beaches that ring the island. Smith’s Reef, off the northwest corner, is a great spot for beginners to learn about reef life, through underwater signs that describe the resident marine life along a marked path. Bight Reef has a similar educational slant to it, while advanced snorkelers might want to book a day cruise out to neighboring cays. Divers have just as much to choose from, with renowned operator Art Pickering headquartered out of Turtle Cove. Courses, gear, and excursions to Provo’s best sites are available.

Hankering for some aquatic action in the Turks & Caicos? Keep your head above water, in the evening at least, at these villas:

Voce del Mar
Perfect for snorkel-lovers, the 3 bedroom Voce del Mar is perched overlooking the ocean and features a walkway leading to turquoise-blue waters. Casually elegant interiors are complimented by lovely landscaping and a large pool.

Villa Jasmine
Villa Jasmine is a super-private, 4BR villa located just 200 meters from one of Provo’s famous white sand beaches. Decorated in a contemporary Mediterranean style, lots of emphasis is placed on outdoor living around its pool, under the canopy and on secluded dining terraces.

Chalk Sound
Enveloped in a cheery yellow, Chalk Sound villa will put you in a good mood too with its enviable waterfront location. The views from its pool terrace are spectacular and continue upstairs from balconies off the bedrooms, all of which are independently air-conditioned.

Did You Know?

The Turks & Caicos chain is actually made up of about ten main islands, only eight of which are inhabited, and many uninhabited cays. These cays make great day trips, where you can relax with a picnic and have plenty of undisturbed snorkeling waters.
