Get the Most Out of Your Golf Trip to Barbados
Caribbean island one of the best choices for a golf-themed vacation
By Heather Whipps
As one of the bigger islands in the Caribbean chain, Barbados has a natural advantage over some of its smaller compatriots when it comes to the world of golf. The sport is popular here for a lot of reasons – British tradition and ideal weather not withstanding – but it’s certainly helped by the abundance of green space it has to devote to 18-hole lengths. Toss in the sea views you get around every bend and the proximity to the beach (perfect for soothing post-game muscles), and it’s a veritable golfer’s paradise. And that means Barbados appeals to golfers of all dimensions: from pros and amateurs, to bachelors celebrating a week off, to parents looking to initiate the young ones in the sport they’ve played here since they were little, too.
You’ll count not just one, but several championship-quality golf courses across Barbados’ rolling hills. Sandy Lane is perhaps its best known, helped out by a certain American golf phenom who held his well-publicized wedding there in October of 2004. Sandy Lane is actually a sprawling luxury resort that includes a hotel, villas and three golf courses: a Tom Fazio-designed Country Club championship course, a nine-hole that winds through the estate’s oldest territory and the new, impressive Green Monkey course. The PGA has recently announced it will hold its annual World Cup of Golf on the Country Club Course in December of 2006. Have a go at it yourself early or be a spectator, but be warned that accommodations will likely fill up fast for this prestigious event. Sandy Lane itself has a lot to offer, but you’re never too far from the action as long as you stay somewhere along the popular west coast. Reeds House No. 4, a two-bedroom villa right on the beach, is just a couple minutes’ drive from the course – after the sand traps of the course, enjoy the more forgiving sandy beach outside your villa. Not two miles away is Blue Lagoon, a three-bedroom beachfront home with an elevated plunge pool.

The other, some would say best, course on the island is located within the enclaves of Royal Westmoreland, a residential area where the lush and carpet-soft stretches of fairway twist and turn around the complex’s villas, tennis courts, pools and activity centers. You can choose to stay just yards away from the course at a villa like Cassia Heights #3, which includes some free rounds of golf in its rental price, or just outside the gates in the hilltop neighborhood that overlooks the sea to the west. In this category, Crossbow’s west-facing dining terrace is an ideal spot to share a meal after the workout. And how better to celebrate a birdie, eagle or (fingers crossed) hole-in-one than with a toast of bubbly champagne in the bubbly Jacuzzi?
For those looking to brush up on their skills without having to brave the testing courses mentioned above, Barbados even offers a golf academy with driving range. Located in the southern parish of Christchurch, wannabes can learn in a casual atmosphere either from a pro or on their own.
