International Jazz Festival Heats Up Jamaica
Get your groove on this June in Ocho Rios

 String together the words music and Jamaica in the same sentence and one thing inevitably pops to mind: reggae. Blame Bob Marley. The truth is that Jamaica is a diverse island with eclectic tastes, producing many of the Caribbean’s most prolific jazz musicians, among other genres. This upcoming June 10-18, Jamaica celebrates its deep jazzy roots with another installment of its annual Ocho Rios International Jazz Festival.
This year the festival is celebrating its sixteenth anniversary, with jazz legend Houston Person slated among the top performers. Doesn’t ring a bell? No matter: whether you like jazz or not, it will be impossible not to have a good time. The atmosphere, almost 100% guaranteed great weather and infectious energy of the people will have you be-bopping under the sun whether you intended to or not.
Events will take place mainly in and around Ocho Rios, the seaside town on Jamaica’s north coast. Organizers promise plenty of music, of course, but the area has lots to do for those hours in between concerts. Old plantation estates are abundant in greater Ocho Rios, including the Prospect Plantation, where you can horseback ride through its land or play mini golf. Dunn’s River Falls is probably the area’s most famous attraction; you’ve seen the photos: tentative groups strung together, climbing the rocks up to the top of the waterfalls. The less adventurous can stay on the beach nearby, or check out one of Ocho Rios’ many other sandy offerings.
