Find Your Vacation Nirvana in Jamaica
Jamaica’s northern coast serves up a buffet of activities
By Heather Whipps
Jamaica is a big island and its cities are definitely not ‘you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ‘em all’. From hedonistic Negril to tranquil Orcabessa to the cool, dense Blue Mountain range of its interior, there’s so much diversity of landscape here that it would take several trips to cover it all. The north coast is a destination in itself – a feast of shimmering beaches and fragrant gardens spanning about 150 miles of Caribbean coastline. Starting with Montego Bay in the west and traveling eastwards through Discovery Bay to Ocho Rios, the region adheres to a lifestyle that’s a bit slower and more languid than its south coast counterpart. Each of its main towns has something a little different on offer, too, though you can’t really go wrong with any of these attraction-packed locales – with something for everyone, from the kids to teens to Mom and Dad.

Here are some of our suggestions for your next holiday to the north... Jamaica, that is:
Montego Bay
Mo’Bay is a Caribbean muse, displaying an often emulated but never quite duplicated mix of authentic island feel and tourist facilities. It is Jamaica’s largest and busiest resort area, and that means enough things to do and see for at least a few holidays. Don’t miss Mo’Bay’s variety of busy markets, where you can pick up everything from woven crafts to Bob Marley memorabilia. The golfing around Montego Bay is great, too. River Mist and Star Apple House are two villas within a few minutes drive of town. Their hillside locations are a welcome retreat from the hustle and bustle.

Ocho Rios
Locals call it "Ochie", you’ll call it paradise. Ocho Rios is famous for its ferngully-esque hills and forests, endless carpets of green and great beaches. More tranquil than Mo’Bay, attractions on display here range from the grand plantation-era estates to Dunn’s River Falls. Kids would love a river raft cruise. Stay at L’Horizon or Edgewater villa to explore Ocho Rios, respectively seven and four-bedroom villas with ideal positions near the water.

Discovery Bay
This peaceful community about 25 miles west of Ocho Rios has a distinct atmosphere all its own. Though there’s plenty to see within a few miles of Discovery Bay, visitors come here mainly for the peace, quiet and homey atmosphere that makes for a great family holiday. Sea Haven and Coral Cove are two quintessentially Discovery Bay villas, both waterfront, private and with full staff – to make a trip here even more idyllic.
