Acapulco: Be Seduced by the Cosmopolitan Vibe
Urban beach oasis is ideal for those who crave an upbeat tempo
By Heather Whipps
Mexico has its fair share of charming and quaint beach towns. Acapulco is not one of them, but that doesn’t mean it lacks its fair share of devotees. This veritable city – it counts over one million residents – is for people who love having everything at their fingertips in a tropical setting... much more St. Tropez than St. John. It’s sizzling in temperature and in atmosphere, and glamorous in every respect.

The city’s image has been cultivating for decades now, beginning in the 1920s when jet-setters began descending on the stunning arc of Acapulco Bay and calling it their home away from home. In many ways the hallmark of the city, the bay view, book-ended by green mountains and white-soft beaches, did more to make it famous than the celebrities who played here. Streaked with acrobatic water skiers and bronzed, sunglass-wearing bodies on jet skis, it is postcard perfect and promises to remain so as long as the stylish people keep coming.
Not just for party animals, the Acapulco of today offers an urban environment that’s both lively and sophisticated. The seafood here is as fresh as can be and served with gusto at dining establishments that rival North America’s best gourmet offerings. Baikal is the best example of its very-Acapulco culinary style: this super trendy restaurant is built into a cliff side and serves fusion cuisine with a Mexican flair. Patrons traipse out sometime after midnight for one of the city’s many chic nightclubs, like Baby-O, a five-bar favorite that often bumps through the wee hours into the morning. Spa treatments and boutique shopping are popular activities during the day, as are trips to surrounding golf courses or Old Acapulco. That’s when you’re not at the beach, of course, where people-watching is an event all its own.

Bright, Sun-Shiny Day
Acapulco is legendary for its sunshine. Turns out, the rumors are true: the sheltered bay gets 360 days of sun per year on average with temperatures rarely dipping below the 70s. |
