Top 5 Caribbean Treats for Kids
Let us suggest your next family-friendly destination
By Heather Whipps
Caribbean villas are more than ideal for those times when you not only want to tote the kids along on holiday, but also keep them happy and their little hands and brains busy throughout. Villas offer a private and secure environment wherever you go, and keeping an eye on the young ones can be as comfortable as it is back home. An added bonus: while the privacy factor is high, villas are usually also just a few minutes from the kid-friendly activities (read : less time for them to whine ‘are we there yet ?’). Most revolve around the sea, naturally, but many Caribbean islands have also developed activities—like historical tours—that kids would find fun too. Here are our picks for the top five Kidtastic destinations:
Riviera Maya, Mexico
Kids aren’t as easily impressed by the same little things—soft beaches, great views, killer sunrises—as adults tend to be, but even they might take a moment to admire the beauty of the Riviera Maya. Great views aside, there are tons of things to do in this area, including the educational (but don’t tell them !): see the ruins of Chichen Itza and teach them about the Maya or visit nature parks like Xcaret, which teem with seaside fun and offer informative tours about the region’s natural history.

Montego Bay, Jamaica
Montego Bay is a living and breathing Jamaican town, but one that’s been cultivated for tourism enough that kids can be satiated with activity in just a few square blocks. Check out the craft fairs (girls might like to have their hair braided nearby) and Aguasol Theme Park, an entertainment complex with water slides, a go-kart track and reggae shows.

Turks and Caicos
Visiting the Turks and Caicos is like taking the kids to a sterile (in a good way) theme park—only the theme here is peace and relaxation. Even Providenciales, its largest and most popular island, is largely cordoned off from the pollution and crowds that can mar some holiday destinations. This is the perfect place for families who like quiet beach picnics, boat tours and generally just being together.

Barbados
Barbados—a large island with tons to do—makes the list on sheer variety. Variety of entertainment, like its fun botanical gardens, but also of people. Kids will become mini international diplomats quickly here, with beach playmates stemming from several continents. Bajans are incredibly friendly too and will make your little ones feel more than welcome, be it on the golf course or in restaurants.

Cayman Islands
This is the Dora the Explorer of Caribbean islands, with enough kid-geared activities to keep even the crankiest young ones blissfully sedate. A lot of that excitement is oriented towards the water, with Grand Cayman especially boasting an international reputation for its offshore offerings. This is probably the best place to teach the kids to snorkel, scuba and get friendly with nature at famous Stingray City—a sandbar thick with the gentle creatures, which you can feed and stroke.

Honorable Mention
The peaceful island of Nevis might not initially appeal to kids, but it sure will to their parents: while adult guests of the villas at Nevis’ Four Seasons resort attend cocktail hour, children are occupied by games and storytelling by trained resort staff. Other kids activities include water sports and tennis lessons. |
