Trip Report: Dos Amigos in Cabo San Lucas
Mexican villas get top marks in style, views and fun

Someone once said that you shouldn’t look forward to something too much because you’re bound to be disappointed. I’m happy to say that this was definitely not the case with our trip to Cabo San Lucas, as all our expectations were definitely exceeded by the vibrant town and truly amazing villas. My fellow villa specialist Wade and I arrived in Mexico via the San José del Cabo airport and then pointed our rental car south. The 30 minute drive along the Corridor was truly spectacular and a perfect introduction to the region; our anticipation only intensified once we were greeted with a view of the turquoise coast sparkling temptingly on one side and on the other, cacti giving way to emerald green golf courses.
While in Cabo, Wade and I stayed at Las Flores, an incredibly impressive 7 bedroom villa. We were struck with the size and elegance of the place; the large terrace, with its BBQ, grill, outdoor fridge and spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, is the perfect place for events and we couldn’t help imagining how great it would be to host a wedding or business retreat here. We visited over 30 villas in the area and although all of them exuded irresistible Mexican charm, a few stand out in our minds. Villa Hayden is a super luxurious 4 bedroom home on the oceanfront in Santa Carmela. It struck us as a chic getaway for couples, with its infinity edge pool, piano under the veranda and mesmerizing sound of waves crashing on the rocks below. Further along the corridor, we also fell for Taz in a big way. Near Palmilla, this 6500 square foot villa is elegantly and comfortably decorated and we felt right at home. It includes 5 bedrooms and an amazing outdoor pool and Jacuzzi, and seems the perfect place for a family vacation in Mexico. Two villas that took me by surprise were Didier and Amanecer; photos definitely do not do these two justice as they were surprisingly large. And what a view! - you can see both the town and the Sea of Cortez in the distance from both.
Speaking of the town, it was certainly not with reluctance that we faced the task of getting to know it. Cabo San Lucas is kind of like Cancún used to be before everyone knew about it and the tourists started flowing in. There are many streets for strolling, restaurants, shops and no end of activities to suit every taste. Sample the local tequila at Cabo Wabo Cantina (owned by the former singer of Van Halen Sammy Hagar) or put in some overtime at The Office, a beach bar with a cheeky name that we liked. For amazing seafood and steak, La Golondrina Trading Post Restaurant gets my recommendation. The perfect place for swimming and lounging is Médano Beach, a super long stretch of soft sand where you can also rent jet skis or take a boat cruise to see the famous rock arches that separate the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific Ocean.
Whether it’s a fun-filled family vacation or a secluded beachfront getaway, Cabo San Lucas really does have something for everyone, and take my word for it, the villas here will take your breath away.
