Activities For Villa Vacationers On The Go
Top-rated land & water sports tempt Caribbean travelers
By Heather Whipps

Proving the proverb wrong, you really can please everyone on a Caribbean holiday. With an abundance of activities to keep them busy, the sporty-types in your group will have no excuse to complain while the beach-inclined make one with the sand all week. Here is our list of what to do and where, aimed at the more active among us for whom the word holiday does not mean taking a break

Windsurfing in the Dominican
Expert windsurfers chase good winds and friendly waves around the world, but the Caribbean boasts more than its fair share of breezy nooks for any amateur looking to try the sport for the first time, or hone their skills a little. The Dominican Republic’s northern coast, always just a pleasant bit blustery, is a windsurfing hotspot and a great place to start out. The town of Sosua, home to the villas Quintaessencia and Villa Hammond, is awash in watersports kiosks where you can rent equipment and receive instruction.

Scuba Diving in Turks & Caicos
One of the biggest draws of any activity in the entire Caribbean, scuba diving is available throughout the islands and is one of those addictive things you’ll want to do over and over again. Good thing, then, that the Turks and Caicos alone have enough reefs and wrecks to explore for any one person on many trips over. Providenciales, with the most dive operators, is the best place to make your base. Stargazer, an ultra-equipped luxury villa on the north coast, looks out over the barrier reef that runs along the length of this shore. Alternatively, a stay at nearby The Palms puts you close to the oldest and best dive operator on the island.

Fishing in Belize & Grenada
Be it deep-sea or shallow trolling, fishing is one activity that doesn’t often gets its active due. Fighting for and then hauling in your catch can be a real workout, one with a satisfying reward when the fresh booty is cooked and eaten for dinner. With all that water, the Caribbean is an obvious buffet of fishing opportunity. El Pescador, in fact, was named for the activity, so guests of the luxury complex in Belize can expect their hosts to be knowledgeable and have plenty of resources in the excursion department. Switching islands altogether, fishers will salivate at the deep-sea pools of marlin, wahoo and tuna in Grenada. The villa Adventurous Avocado is located near the capital and where all the action happens.

Hiking in Jamaica
With the relatively small size of most Caribbean islands, the variety of hiking trails available are amazing in their breadth. From steamy hills to desert landscapes, giant swatches of land have been put aside (often as National Parks) solely for the enjoyment of the active walker. Jamaica is a standout example, as its Blue Mountains cut a wide path across the island and hide over 30 known trails. Since few villas are actually located within the mountains themselves and rather cut a ring around the perimeter, take your pick: L’Horizon in Ocho Rios and Mount Corbett Estate in Discovery Bay both offer a luxurious respite after your long trek.

At One With Nature

Swimming with wildlife is a big thing in the Caribbean, and there’s no shortage of islands (or species) to satisfy your desire for aquatic adventure. Today, you can swim with dolphins in Jamaica, with turtles in Barbados, and stingrays in the Cayman Islands. What’s next, one wonders?
