Our Compass Points to Great Mexican Villas
Fantastic villa experiences in the four corners of Mexico
By Heather Whipps
Below, we highlight the villas and specialties of Mexico’s four dreamy directions, more distorted triangle than proper cardinal cross. See these locales and you’ll forgive us the geographical liberties.
North
No, not North as in frigid temps and snow-filled days. Mexico’s North, which includes the western-protruding Baja Peninsula, is just as balmy as anywhere else in the country and quite unique in its offerings. Particularly notable is the town of Cabo San Lucas, an effervescent and rising star in the luxury travel world. This party town, with niche communities of high-end retreats and multi-million dollar homes, is growing a fan base beyond the Spring Breakers that used to cram its streets. Still thumping through the night, you can also play golf on world-class fairways and dine at five-star restos. Three very different villas are new additions to our Cabo collection: Casa Cielo is a three-bedroom villa within a larger luxury complex. Its third-floor position affords great views of the sea. Casa W and Villa Gaviota, eight and four bedroom villas respectively, are private homes; Villa Gaviota is located right on the beach.

East
There’s a reason the Mayans made the Yucatan, and particularly the coastal stretch now called the Riviera Maya, their home. White beaches run nearly undisturbed here from Cancun and Cozumel in the north to Mexico’s border with Belize in the south. Along the way, one of the world’s premiere reef systems offers snorkeling and diving for the amateurs to the experts. Inland caves and ruins promise Indiana Jones-esque exploration. Towns like Playa del Carmen and Akumal serve up a slice of authentic Mexico while catering to your tourist needs. If you’d like to set up on the east coast, choose among these villas in different spots along the shore: Villa Nooren, a brand new five-bedroom home on Paradise Beach; Villa Aqua, a sleek and modern five-bedroom with full staff included; Villa Eden, a Mediterranean-style home just a few steps from the beach on the island of Cozumel.

South
The starlit crescent of Acapulco Bay is an iconic image dating back to the glamour-era of movie stars and business moguls. Still glitzy, Acapulco has expanded its cache a bit and now welcomes everyone from families to corporate retreats (and a fair share of celebs still, too). The real draw of this town and the ones surrounding it remains the local flavor, intense and inviting despite the invasion by travelers from around the world. Experience Acapulco with a stay at Casa Iguana, an ethereal seven-bedroom home built into the cliffside. Ixtapa, slightly less frenetic than Acapulco but with its own charms, offers La Casa del Sol. This four-bedroom villa is sophisticated and Mexican in style, with a full staff to cater to guests’ needs.

West
The western, Pacific coastline of Mexico is a dramatic mix of crashing waves and rocky cliffs, beaches and jungle. Costa Careyes is part of this region and rolls all those characteristics into one dreamlike landscape, an eco-beach community planned around and as a part of the environment it is trying to protect. The villas here, each unique in detail but streamlined in design and architecture, are a natural fit. Guests of Casa Nido de Amor or Sol de Oriente come to explore, to immerse in Mexican culture and, above all, to relax. Slightly less sleepy, Puerto Vallarta to the north has remained another true beacon of the Mexican way of life, despite developing over the years into a top tourist destination. Besides the cultural delights, ecotourism also abounds here in the form of diving, hiking and whale-watching. Try to spot the huge mammals (along with some playful dolphins) from the balcony of Villa Mia.

CAPITAL INTEREST
If you’re interested in squeezing a day trip to Mexico City into your holiday, the best coastal community to make your base is Acapulco. The three and a half hour drive is worth it to see one of the world’s most populated and dynamic cities. |
