Hot Sun, Warm Ocean, Cool breezes:
How fishing excursions are quickly becoming a family affair
By Heather Whipps

There was a time when fishing excursions were a Father-and-Son kind of holiday, usually involving some remote cottage, a primitive vessel and mosquitoes—lots of them. No longer. Angling is becoming more and more a family affair, getting the girls in on the act along with every generation from Grandma and Grandpa on down. It’s always been a popular activity in the Caribbean, which offers some of the best shallow and deep-sea fishing anywhere in the Western Hemisphere. It’s also easy and no experience is required, with most islands boasting professional outfitters that can take care of everything, from teaching you the basics to supplying your bait to preparing a delicious lunch to refuel between goes at the poles.

Fishing excursions are a great excuse to get off the beach for a day, get out on the water and learn something new together. A bonus? They’re guaranteed to result in a few memorable snapshots of the family in action to frame later on. Here are our suggestions for some great family fishing destinations down south:

Mexico
Bordered by two seas, an ocean and a gulf, it’s no small wonder that Mexico is considered an angler’s dream. That’s a lot of water—and fish—to choose from. For families, especially, we’d recommend Acapulco or Cabo San Lucas, two great fishing destinations that can also keep everyone in your gang busy and happy the entire holiday. Tour operators are concentrated in the town marina here, so you have your pick of style, length and price depending on your family’s plan for the day. Once on the boat and with a little luck, you should be able to snag one of several marlin species that trawl these waters.

Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic offers the best of both fishing worlds—inshore and offshore, freshwater and saltwater—depending on which coast you choose. Stick close to Casa de Campo if you’re looking for stories to tell: some of the biggest snook on record were caught here. The north coast is a bit more rugged and is great for adventure-seekers wanting to head a bit further out to sea. Either way, your family is in good hands—Dominican fishermen are old pros and will probably regale you with their own stories of the ones that got away.

Cofresi Villa 8

Turks & Caicos
Maybe the Granddaddy of them all, the Turks and Caicos are a world-renowned fishing destination if there ever was one, offering a barrier reef for exciting inshore cruising as well as deeper waters thick with a rich variety of marine life. There will be plenty of tour operators to choose from there and most will happily tailor a half or full-day excursion to your family’s desires. Expect a crew, gear, bait and probably lunch to be tossed in as a package deal. We recommend special requesting a picnic on one of the many deserted islets in the area—the perfect accompaniment to your quintessentially Caribbean experience.

Catch of the Day

Villas and fishing excursions go hand-in-hand, given that many of our homes include personal chefs who will cook up whatever bounty you bring back at the end of the day. Just make an effort to catch enough for the whole family!
