Top 5 Things To Do on Mexico’s Pacific Coast
Experience the best of western Mexico’s menu of attractions
By Heather Whipps
Beach bums; sports hounds; party maniacs… No personality goes unsatisfied on Mexico’s dramatic Pacific coast, with each town offering something unique to the holiday experience. You’ll be hard-pressed to find flashy clubs in peaceful Costa Careyes, for example, while Acapulco bumps all night. Golfers love Puerto Vallarta, and sailors, Ixtapa. Consult our list of the region’s top five activities if you’re heading that way and, no matter where you end up, you’ll have something to do too:

1. Go Whale-Watching
Mexico, and in its Pacific bays in particular, is considered one of the world’s premiere destinations for whale-watching. Puerto Vallarta’s Banderas Bay attracts both whales and, as a bonus, wild dolphins during the months of December to March especially, when humpbacks migrate south from the Arctic to breed and spawn their young in the warm waters. Ask the staff at Casa Gran Dia, a six-bedroom villa overlooking the ocean, to arrange a viewing tour during your stay.

2. Learn to Scuba Dive
With an aquatic buffet of caves, coral and cays to explore, Pacific Mexico is a great place to learn how to scuba dive. In Ixtapa, you can dive year-round in clear water, and there are several certified outfitters to choose from for instruction and day trips. Not a scuba fan? Watch your friends from the pool deck at La Casa del Sol, a four-bedroom villa set high above the water in the peaceful community of Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo.

3. Enjoy a Day Cruise
If you’re more of a drinks-in-the-sun personality than sportif on holiday (or just like to mix it up a bit), a day cruise is a great way to see a lot of Mexico’s gorgeous Pacific coast scenery without having to move around all that much yourself. Most day cruises set out in the early afternoon and offer lunch or dinner, drinks and entertainment for one price, returning to the port from which you set sail. These types of day trips are popular in Manzanillo, where you can stay at Casa Acantilada and relax under the shade of its palapa after a day at sea.

4. Find Inner Peace
The views along Mexico’s Pacific stretch are postcard-perfect in general, but nowhere is that more true than in Costa Careyes. The lush, winding cliffsides connecting the beach towns here seem to cram an inordinate amount of beauty into a relatively small package, forming the perfect backdrop for a zen holiday of rest and rejuvenation. Casa Nido de Amor is a peaceful headquarters to disconnect from the real world, with three bedrooms and alfresco lounges overlooking the water. If that weren’t enough, a full-blown spa sits not five minutes away.

5. Join the Festivities
Nary a month goes by when Mexicans don’t have a celebration in honor of a patron saint, historical day, or even national beverage (tequila, of course!). The country, including its Pacific coast, loves a good party and they’ll warmly welcome in anyone wishing to join in the fun. The Day of the Dead is celebrated throughout the region, as is Mexican Independence Day and Cinco de Mayo. On the more secular side of things, Acapulco hosts a number of well-known film and music festivals. You can see what the entire city has going on from the balcony at Villa Estrella, a beautiful four-bedroom home atop the Las Brisas hotel.

Bonus: 6. Discover Your Inner Adventurer...
With dramatic mountains and dense jungles a hallmark of the region, the Pacific coast of Mexico is perfect for seasoned adventure travelers and those looking for a place to start. While here, why not try a canopy tour, river rafting, or rappelling? |
