Caribbean Hot Spots for Lovers of Nightlife
Party till the tropical sun comes up at these island destinations
By Heather Whipps
Holidays geared specifically for sampling the nightlife aren’t for everyone. These kinds of trips are great for a girls’ getaway, boys’ week, or gangs of couples who just like to have a good time. But a good time they will definitely have. Nightlife in the Caribbean is different than what you’re used to. The clubs – if you can call them that – are often glorified beach shacks, torch-lit and sandy-floored. Not that anyone complains. With no strict dress codes and the carefree attitude of people on holiday, this kind of unpretentious hangout is usually just what the doctor ordered. Here are a few of our favorite nightlife destinations:

Barbados
Atmosphere: Just because Bajans are known for their reserved British demeanor doesn’t mean they can’t throw a good party. The island is home to plenty of good bars where locals and visitors mingle after lazy days on the beach.
Check out... Harbour Lights in Bridgetown, the most popular weekend hangout on the entire island. Its oceanfront patio is worth the trip alone. On the west coast, John Moore Bar attracts a mix of patrons.
...And drink: Banks beer, naturally! This national brew dominates in Barbados.
Villas: Reeds House No. 4

Montego Bay, Jamaica
Atmosphere: Lots of fun minus the uncouth crowds that pepper parts of Jamaica, Mo’ Bay is classy yet open for some after-dark revelry. It’s also a thriving town on its own, so expect to mingle with plenty of the friendly local people aside from the tourist set.
Check out... Sun Daze, an authentic Jamaican resto/club dishing out, along with island dishes, reggae and calypso until the wee hours of the morning.
...And drink: Rum punch. Jamaica is famous for its dark, Appleton rum, great accompaniment to many a tropical juice.
Villas: River Mist

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Atmosphere: Puerto Vallarta has been a nightlife hot spot for decades, so it really knows how to do things right. It also means you’ll have your choice of contemporary clubs, places to salsa through the night and jazzy bars seemingly plucked from the days of old; mix it up and alternate each night.
Check out... de Santos, a chic dance club that’s also one of the city’s best restaurants. Stylish patrons can choose to hang out between multiple floors or on beach loungers outside.
...And drink: A margarita. This often funky-colored beverage is a staple in Mexico.
Villas: Villa Mia

St. Martin
Atmosphere: A rare combination of an upscale vibe without the pretentiousness, St. Martin is one of those perfect something-for-everyone islands. After dark, its shopping boulevards turn into the paths connecting your many choices for evening entertainment.
Check out... A casino. The Dutch side of the island has thirteen gambling parlors for you to choose from, and most include at least a few restaurants offering the haute-cuisine St. Martin is famous for.
...And eat: Just try everything! The island flies in delicacies from around the world and has expert chefs to prepare them. You’ll never wont for a good restaurant choice on a week-long holiday here.
Villas: Le Mas des Sables
Smaller, But Not Forgotten...
Besides the more familiar night clubs, Barbados is home to its own distinct kind of watering hole: the rum shop. Numbering nearly 2,000, these simple establishments are usually filled with local men discussing anything from local sports to world events. Check one out for a feel of the "real Barbados". |
