Summertime is Perfect for Family Fun in the Sun
Low season in the Caribbean an ideal time for villa vacations
By Heather Whipps
The summer might seem like a strange time to book a family holiday in the Caribbean. It’s already pretty hot where you live, more than likely, so it’s not as though you need the respite of another sunny climate. Consider, though, that in places like Texas and Arizona, summer temperatures can be stifling. July in the Caribbean, meanwhile, is a lot like the winter months, with the strong sun tempered by cooling trade winds that constantly waft in from the shore. In comparison, the sun-filled getaway could still be a delightful change of pace. Other advantages of a summer holiday in the Caribbean? The most obvious is fewer visitors, forcing prices everywhere – including villa rentals – much lower. You’re far more likely to find beaches deserted in June than in February, too, when finding towel space on the popular stretches of sand can be a challenge. Kids are also on break from school, making it that much easier to find weeks in which to travel.

Need we go on? How about authenticity? Either by chance or with some scheduling savvy, many Caribbean destinations plan their biggest and best festivals during the summer months so as not to coincide with the influx of tourists. The festivals are more authentic that way and let you get involved without feeling like one in a crowd of other foreign party-crashers. Crop Over, Barbados’ biggest annual celebration, falls in July and features a month-long series of parties and entertainment. Residents of St. Barts, like their French compatriots in Europe, celebrate Bastille Day on July 14th. A merengue festival gets Dominicans – and anyone else who wants to join in -dancing in Santo Domingo from late July through early August.
And finally, let’s get real: few North Americans can boast being within strolling proximity of a beach, let alone one as nice as you’d find in the Caribbean. With everyone wanting to be close to the sand, competition for the best villas can also get ugly in the wintertime. Not so in summer. The Inevitable FAQ
We know what you’re thinking: what about the hurricanes? Though, technically speaking, hurricane season in the Caribbean runs from June through November, it’s rare for big storms to occur before the end of August. If you’re still worried, head south and west: islands like Aruba and Curacao are usually untouched by hurricanes, and Mexico’s Pacific coast is outside of the storm belt altogether. |
