Secret Anguilla: New Villas on the Unknown Isle
Celebrity hot-spot prefers its low profile, slow pace
By Heather Whipps
If you don't know much about Anguilla, that's on purpose. Locals and regular visitors to this skinny Leeward island tend to keep the place low on the radar, so as to not disturb its secret-hideaway cachet. They've been pretty successful: Anguilla is still somewhere you (and celebrities, regularly) can really unwind without getting jostled by crowds or bombarded by kitschy tourist shops and peddlers. It's sophisticated and low-key, with some activity—mostly waterbound on its gorgeous, clear seas—but is geared largely towards lazy, sophisticated beach holidays. No fewer than thirty-three beaches ring the island and have been described as the best and softest in the Caribbean by some very well-traveled visitors. The favorite pastime on Anguilla? Testing each stretch and just passing time like a barefoot island castaway.
There's also gourmet cuisine here, a small selection of nightlife (often open-air) and some off-road type nooks worthy of an explore. We suggest you start out with a villa, the beach and see where you go from there.
Here's where to stay …
Desert Rose
This three bedroom villa on the northeast coast of Anguilla is a showcase of natural stonework: inside, you'll find fossilized coral lining walls in the living room and master bedroom, Italian marble floors throughout and blush-colored polished rock native to the island encasing the entire exterior. The villa's manmade amenities are just as impressive; when you're done enjoying the infinity-edge pool and lounge chairs on its terrace, head indoors and a flat screen TV, Bose stereo system and iPod docking station await to entertain.
Infinity, Harmony & Mystique
Lots of small and exotic touches make these three 14,000 square foot villas special, apart from their commanding position on Anguilla's south coast. Each super-home in this intimate complex features marble floors, twisty balustrades and dark hardwood ceilings—all handcrafted. While an Asian feel pervades, elevated loft suites overlooking St. Martin assure you you're still in the Caribbean. Seven bedrooms offer accommodation for up to 14 people in each home and children are welcome. Media rooms with wet bars by the private pools will keep the adults happy, too. The villas are fully-staffed, including chef. Note: Mystique is available for rent and will be added to our website soon.
...and a couple of old favorites

Villa Paradise Staffed, seven-bedroom villa on the water with views of St. Martin.

Zenaida Beach & Tennis Estate Multi-pavilioned home with private beach and tennis court.

Villa Azure An architectural gem on a Shoal Bay cliffside. Great views from the pool.
That's Just Silly
Anguilla is famous for serving five-star quality food at casual beach restaurants. Take this to the extreme with a stop at Scilly Cay, a small spit of an island off Island Harbor. The freshest lobster and crayfish around is served there on its verandah, often accompanied by some live music. The restaurant has its own boat to ferry patrons back and forth from the "mainland". |
